These willow chairs are fitted with joints made at points of tangency
as one willow piece passes another.

This work is made with black locust pegs for each joint of the willow construction.
This table was built using only willow twigs sewn together with hemp
fibers soaked in natural urushi lacquer to form all the joints.
The top is 7 layers of hemp fibers and urushi lacquer.
This piece was created for the 2006 Peabody Essex Museum’s exhibit “Inspired by China”
of hardwood casework and bent willow work and urushi lacquer. Inspired by a
traditional Chinese home altar table. It is now part of the
Peabody Essex Museum’s permanent collection.
